Mastercard German Open semifinal

May, 10th 2003
Clijsters D Capriati 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-3

Q. You didn't play a bad match, but still, you lost.
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I could have played better, I guess. I definetely had my chances. She was getting a lot of balls back. I hadn't playes her in a while. She retrieves a lot of balls. I think it was a good match on both ends.

Q. You didn't hold serve in the third set.
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: It is definitely a matter of points here and there; like a couple of points at that level decide the match. I missed an easy point and you can't do that against a top player.

Q. She came strong over the last year, since you hadn't played her. How did she improve? Do you see any changes?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: She is more consistent. She has always been a good mover, but maybe she moves a little better. She is also stronger. She didn't do many mistakes. Before she was a little erratic. She definetely plays smart tennis out there. She just knows what to do with the ball. She rarely plays the ball in the middle.

Q. You seemed to have a problem with your lower back?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I was getting a little tight out there. It was nothing major. Probably just from the cold and the clay.

Q. Did that effect your start?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: No. It was getting worse as the match went on. I was getting a little tight and I wasn't moving as well as in the last couple of matches. But, it's the first couple of matches and I don't want to peak to soon (laughs).

Q. Do you think it was one of your best matches here. I know you lost, but...?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I don't really remember. Yes, I guess it was one of the best maches from the whole last time, but I played a very good first set against Serena. I think that was the best.

Q. You are still moving forward. Do you feel you are back up to where you were?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I am definetely going to take a positive note from this. Kim really played great, but I definetely could have won.

Q. When Kim was serving on that matchpoints at 5:4, do you need to focus and concentrate even more? What is on your mind?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I know that the match isn't over till it is over. Anything can happen. I had my experiences with that for sure. The other person can get nervous and make mistakes. I go in more and either it works in my favour or not.

Q. Give us some more thoughts on the third please?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I think I started off playing well. I thought maybe at that point that I had it. She started to make a few mistakes. But, I lost a bit of energy on that game. She got the momentum back and I got a little tired.

Q. At that stage, you went a little more into the ball, putting more pressure on Kim. Did you feel confident with that?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I think I played better as the match went on. In the first, I played defensive, letting her dictate, not being aggressive. I started doing that better in the second and third. Even though I lost, it is still good.

Q. What does your schedule look like now before the Roland Garros?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I will go to Rome. Then, I will take a week off.

Q. Will you go back home or will you stay in Europe?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I will stay in Europe.

Q. What do you think about this tournament, the German Open?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: It's a good tournament. It has always been well liked with the players. Many top players come and play here. It is well organised.
